Serediptyについて

セレンディピティ（Serendipity）とは、何かを探している時に、探しているものとは別の価値あるものを見つける能力・才能を指す言葉である。何かを発見したという「現象」ではなく、何かを発見をする「能力」のことを指す。
Serendipityという言葉は、ホレス・ウォルポールが１７５４年に造語した言葉である。
彼が子供のときに読んだ『セレンディップの三人の王子』という童話に因んだ造語である（セレンディップは「スリランカの３人の王子」という意味の題名である）。
ウォルポールがこの言葉を初めて用いたのは、友人に宛てた書簡において、「セレンディップの三人の王子」の童話で、「王子たちは旅の途中、いつも意外な出来事と遭遇し、彼らの聡明さによって、彼らがもともと探していなかった何かを発見する。例えば、王子の一人は、自分が進んでいる道を少し前に片目のロバが歩いていたことを発見します。何故分かったかというと、道の左側の草だけが食べられていたためなのです。」と説明している。
英英辞書では以下の通りの説明がある。
Serendipity: the natural ability to make interesting or valuable discoveries by accident　(Longman Dictionary of contemporary English)
このような起源を持ち、辞書で上記のように説明されているように、Serendipityとは、単なる 発見した"幸運" や "偶然" ではなく、発見する「能力」を指している。
セレンディピティは、失敗してもそこから見落としせずに学び取ることができれば成功に結びつくという一種のサクセスストーリーとして、また科学的な大発見をより身近なものとして説明するためのエピソードの一つとして語られることが多い。
一方、A.L.Strauss,B.G.Glaserらは、彼らのGround　Theoryにおいて、社会学の方法として予期しない特異な戦略的なデータが既存の理論の延長または新しい理論の創造の機会になることを観察された経験から、SerediptyはSerendipty　patternとしてイデアの構築に役立つとされている。
また、R.K.Mertonらは、”The Travels　and Adventures of Seredipty" (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2003)で、 ”Serendipty"という造語がつくられてた起源と用途の跡をたどっている。そのなかで、 Serendiptyを目的をもった発見と経験的または、予知能力とを並列させた科学的手法として発展させている

Serendipityを新たな出来事を発見する科学的な手法としてとらえていきたい。
